Facebook Live's quiet constraints

Facebook Live failures often look random because the important rules are not always in the camera setup. The destination has a practical bitrate ceiling, a choice between Profile and Page, and an access token that can age out between shows.

When Facebook is one destination in a multistream, those rules need to be handled without forcing every other destination to use the same settings.

The roughly 4 Mbps ceiling

Facebook Live is generally happiest with a feed around 4 Mbps in the source workflow. Sending more does not guarantee a sharper Facebook picture. It can produce a rejected or unstable destination while YouTube or a custom endpoint continues to receive the source.

ApexStream applies a destination-side cap for Facebook, so the encoder settings remain the settings for your source feed. You can send a stronger master for another destination while the relay gives Facebook the level it can accept. If Facebook is your only destination, set the source with that ceiling in mind and keep the test simple.

Profile and Page are different rooms

A Profile is a personal destination. A Page is a brand or organization destination with its own roles and permissions. Confirm which one you authorized and which one you intend to use before a major show.

ApexStream supports Facebook Profiles and Pages. It does not support Facebook Groups as destinations. A Group audience may be important, but the Group is not the same connection surface. Direct viewers to the supported Profile or Page rather than discovering the difference at go-live.

Under Dashboard → Integrations, check the connected asset. On the channel’s Edit screen, review the title, privacy, and selected Profile or Page. A successful connection to the wrong Page is still the wrong destination.

Tokens expire quietly

Facebook access tokens can expire after idle time, a password change, or a security prompt. The dashboard may look connected until the destination rejects the session. The useful error is often “Facebook session expired,” a failed start, or a destination that drops out of the fan-out.

  1. Open Dashboard → Integrations before the show.
  2. Use Re-connect if Facebook is expired or unreliable.
  3. Authorize the same Profile or Page you checked in the destination settings.
  4. Run a short test when the event matters and confirm that Facebook is receiving the program.

Reconnecting the Facebook session does not refresh an Instagram or TikTok stream key. Treat each credential as its own pre-flight item.

What the three rules mean for a multistream

  • Bitrate: upload one stable master and let the relay respect Facebook’s destination ceiling.
  • Surface: choose a Profile or Page that matches the audience you want to reach; do not assume Groups are supported.
  • Authentication: check and reconnect the session before the countdown, not during the opening.

Facebook counts toward the plan’s destination limit: Free 2, Hobby 3, Creator 5, Scale 8, and Enterprise 50. The number of destinations does not remove Facebook’s own rules, so include those checks in the run-of-show.

How to tell which constraint failed

If the source bitrate and frame rate are steady but Facebook is missing, start with the destination connection and the selected Profile or Page. If Facebook connects and then becomes unstable while the source and another destination look healthy, check the destination-side bitrate behavior. If the dashboard reports an expired session, reconnect the Facebook account rather than changing the encoder.

These checks are quick because they follow the shape of the system: source feed, destination settings, then destination authentication. Keeping that order prevents a Facebook permission problem from turning into an unnecessary redesign of the whole show.

A roughly 4 Mbps ceiling, a Profile-or-Page choice, and an aging token are not edge cases. They are part of producing on Facebook Live.

Confirm the destination, let the relay handle the feed cap, and reconnect before the room fills. The constraints stay quiet when the checklist names them.
